Carmen Ballvé

About

Accomplished documentary photographer specialized in black and white photography. With an artistic journey spanning decades, Carmen has photographed thousands of people in over twenty projects.

Carmen Ballvé earned a degree in “Pedagogy and Educational Science” from the Complutense University of Madrid before going on to study photography at the International Centre of Photography (ICP) in New York. Throughout her career Carmen has made numerous contributions to Spanish newspapers and magazines. Her work has been exhibited in New York, London, and Madrid. Whilst living in the Dominican Republic Carmen produced a documentary and photographic study entitled "Batey Mosquito" This project portrayed the lives of a group of Haitian migrant labourers who worked in the sugar cane fields. Her other works include photographic projects in Ethiopia, Mongolia and Peru; these have featured and been exhibited in international music, film and photography festivals. Beginning in 2010, Ballvé made some trips to Nzali, Tanzania, where she photographed the everyday lives of the local wagogo community. She published the photo journal book “It ends when I get there”, which was awarded Best Published Book by the Spanish Ministry of Culture in 2016, in the art category. Currently Carmen lives and works in Madrid.
